A high school teacher is suspended after being accused of having sex with one of his (male) pupils. He is innocent of the charge, but the idea so captivates him that he decides to give it a try! Needing to get away for a while he goes to Paris and while there he falls head over heels for the young son of his hosts. And the reason he is in Paris is to try and find some pictures of a naked boy and a horse!

But this is no dirty old man's story, but an intriguing blend of fact and fiction - the boy in the pictures is supposedly Allan Stein, nephew of Gertrude, and the pictures are painted by Picasso and a museum in the US would like to purchase them. The prose is elegant, witty, erotic and at times haunting, and the storyline is complex and disturbing - flitting back and forth between Allan's Paris at the turn of the century and the teacher's contemporary city, but most people still seem to focus on the age of the protagonists, calling the book the 'gay Lolita' either as an insult or a compliment!

A fascinating study of unhappy childhoods, obsession and unfulfilled desire, and a pleasure to read. Amazon has the hardcover now and a paperback due early 2000, but in some countires a paperbak is already available!
